CARTS AND HORSES

In the old days before we had cars, the farmers were warned to not put the cart before the horse. Slick salesmen were selling gullible farmers fancy carts that their  horses could not pull.

History repeats itself. Today slick diet salesmen are making a fortune on gullible hefty folks who want to lose weight. Every TV Station is loaded with the adds.  The talk shows have famous folks talking about the weight loss power of their magnificent product.

Analogies play a big role in making decisions, solving problems and frankly have saved me from making the wrong decisions about my health over and over too many times.

I had lost 40 pounds, wrote Give Up the Fat, sold it for$9.95 and made some money. It about eight months I had gained back the 40 pounds. Sales did not slow down, they stopped. Some of the few who still showed up for my workshops walked out before I was finished.

I called my mentor. He used analogies to make a point because truth hurts. He said “You would not go to a dentist who has rotten teeth”. That hurt a bit. Fat people do not do well selling diets. And then my mentor used another analogy. “Physician heal thyself”.  I did not get what he meant and t he said “you are putting the cart before the horse.” My Mentor used analogies to force me to do my own thinking.

Here are some thoughts designed to get us to take care of ourselves and not rely on fast instant cures. The diets that are being marketed are the CART. The HORSE is us.

Here is one that is getting in the middle of my TV watching. A famous person is having a hissy fit of joy selling us on a diet that has over two hundred foods that are great for us to eat as we are losing those pounds. How about those adds with skinny gorgeous people that we can be like in just 90 days. How about those diets that send us10 meals or more every week in the US Mail?

Lets not forget the diets that are sold by that friend who will also make you rich when you also sell the diet.

We are losing the battle of obesity, so I am serious about instant cures. In one day I met a friend who got on a give up protein forever diet. He is back overeating again. That same day another friend wants me to get on this no carb diet and come to the get rich meeting. She is not on that any more. That was several years ago. Both are having health issues.

Just got back form a workshop conducted by a top Heart Doctor. Here is the summery of how to lower risk of heart disease and be more healthy.

Drink lots of water and reduce consumption of all sugar drinks

Eat fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts.

 Walk every day.

Get more sleep.

Forget about the Cart. Pay attention to the Horse

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR BRAIN

The thing on the top of everybody is the Noggin, the location of the greatest computer in the world, called the BRAIN. The brain responds to the five senses, Sound, Sight, Smell, Taste, and Touch. This big fat mussel we call the brain will take in all the data of what, how, and why we do what we do. It will read the emotions of fear, jealousy, greed, anger, and all other negative thoughts. It will also take in   love, forgiveness and all other positive thoughts. From all that input we respond and do it very fast.

Once you memorize and do stuff like ABC’s, foreign language, driving a car, I mean everything it then becomes a habit.

The brain is a lazy dude. Once something becomes a habit the brain does not want you to change. It hates anything new, any change. If you are hooked on a habit you are addicted. If it is a good habit that is a good thing, if a bad habit that is a bad thing.

I am addicted to walking, that is a good thing.

I was addicted to drinking too many sugar drinks, that is a bad thing.

The lazy brain will fight changing either one. What do I do? Sugar drinks are called a drug by doctors.

Ninety-nine % of me being smart is knowing what I am dumb at. I know nothing about how a drug addict can get off drugs and stays off. I got advice from a professional athlete who quit cigarettes and stayed off. He weaned himself off little by little. So here is what I did. Drink a little more water and a little less sugar drink. Drink a little more water and a whole lot less sugar drink. Drink a little more water and no sugar drink. It took about four months and I have not had a sugar drink in the last four years.

Ask Questions and listen to those who “Walk the Talk”.  At a 5K event several years ago I overheard an Ironman talking to a newbie.  He said that if you are serious about the rigorous training you must learn to breathe deep, really deep.

When I get stressed out I may talk before I think, and have been known to lose my temper. I know better, but that dumb brain lets me do it anyway.

I have learned from a Yoga instructor how to breathe deeply most all the time. If you breathe deeply it is almost impossible to lose your temper. Another thing has happened by breathing deeply. My time for 5K events is faster now than in the past 11 years. Sorry dumb brain, that is another bad habit I got rid of and replaced it with the habit of deep breathing.

FRUITS AND RAW VEGGIES AND A BIT OF DIP IS A  GREAT STARTER 

CHECK OUT ALL THE GREAT COOKING ON THAT TABLE.

EAT SMIDGINS, TECHES, PINCHES PARTICLES AND TADS OF ALL THAT GOOD STUFF

 TELL THE "PIG OUT" GRINCH TO GET LOST.

TAKE WHAT YOU WEIGH AND DIVIDE BY TWO-THAT'S HOW MANY OUNCES OF WATER                                                      IS GOOD FOR YOU

A wise athlete taught me that

WATER

TEMPERATURE     Pick a temperature you like. Some like it ice cold.    Water is   cheap. I am cheap. I drink tap water most of the time.

FLAVOR   You can add stuff like limes,cucumbers,extracts (like almond).

FANCY BOTTLES     Show off. 

 STRAWS   I drink more when using a straw.

FIRST THING IN THE MORNING  After a good night's sleep we get thirsty.  A big glass of water will hit the spot.

 SUBSTITUTE IS OK   Tea and coffee are a source of hydration.  Cut out the  cream and sugar.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE  I love to fool my lazy dumb brain. Eat a handful of nuts especially almonds. Chew them real good .Wash the down with a glass of water. The belly tells the brain that was good. The stupid brain thinks you just ate a bunch of fattening crappy food. 

THE MIRACLE.

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT YOU WILL PICK WATER

AND NO MORE SUGAR DRINKS.

 

 


THE PROS CALL "IT" GRAZING

99% of me being smart is knowing what  I am dumb at.  When it comes to eating habits, I listen only to athletes and a  Special Opps that I know. These folks “Walk the Walk before they talk the talk.

They all don’t eat” four squares a day”  Most of my mentors eat five or more times a day and I cannot pinpoint any pattern of when or how much they chow down at a setting.  So we call their eating habit “Grazing”.   One thing for sure. Most all of my mentors hit the protein early in the day. My early couple of meals include protein and fiber. This gives me energy and I drink lots of water.
