The End or the Beginning?

This is the time of year when school ends. The celebration is Graduation or is it Commencement?

I graduated from college in 1954. I had been drafted but the start time in the US Army was deferred until I graduated. I graduated, got married, drafted, had basic and advanced training, shipped oversea to Japan and got my wife pregnant. Oh, I went AWOL one weekend of Basic Training to do that little job. Was the last Half of 1954 the end or the beginning of my commencement?

Two teachers answered that question for me and changed my life forever. Ethel Reno, my third-grade teacher taught me a bunch, but I will always say three words she demanded that I always use and do. “DO IT NOW”.

I had great college teachers, but Prof Hall changed my life forever. He taught me to be a great public speaker and debater. Every time I did good, he said “NOW DO IT BETTER”. These five words have given me direction from the beginning and ending of every day since. I BETTER DO IT NOW. NOW DO IT BETTER.

“You’ve got to follow your passion. You’ve got to figure what it is you love-who you really are. And have the courage to do that. I believe the only courage anybody ever needs is the courage to follow your own dreams” - Oprah Winfrey.

If you are not happy with what you are doing right now, here is my advice.  If what you do right

now, after giving it your full effort for at least 18 months, is not making you happy. QUIT and go do something else. Since 1954 I have been in at least 16 different businesses.

Steve Jobs’ famous commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 when Jobs encouraged the students to peruse the path they really love. “Your work is going to fill large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you will know when you find it.  And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So, keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

If you are just a kid or over 60 find your passion. It will make your heart sing. Your passion is not a hobby or a fad. It is intense. You will want to share it with others. I inform, educate and inspire by writing and talking. My talk is called MY STORY.

I was 72 when I found my passion of HAPPY HEALTHY LIVING. It is never too late to commence to begin following your dream.

WHY  DID I  FAIL FOR 72 YEARS?

  DEPENDING ON THE  INSTANT  GRATIFICATION DIET AND MAGIC FORMULAS  GAME IS A SHORT TERM FIX.

BEING HAPPY AND HEALTHY IS A  SLOW CONSISTENT CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE.

ARE YOU READY TO DRINK WATER AND NO SUGAR DRINKS. I WAS NOT .EVERY DAY I DRANK A LITTLE MORE WATER AND LESS AND LESS SUGAR DRINKS.  IN ABOUT FOUR MONTH I WAS CLEAN AND NOW DRINK LOTS OF WATER AND ZERO SUGAR DRINKS.

I CALL THIS' "WA"

FOOD IS NECESSARY FUEL TO KEEP THE BODY ALIVE. I EAT AT LEAST SEVEN  OR MORE FRESH OR FRESH FROZEN FRUITS, VEGGIES AND NUTS EVERY DAY. I EAT LESS OTHER FOOD ALL THE TIME. I CALL THIS "FO"

WAFO

OUR BODY MUST KEEP IN MOTION OR IT SHUTS DOWN. I WALK EVERY DAY TO KEEP IN MOTION. I CALL THIS"WA". 

SMARTPHONE NEEDS BE RECHARGED. EVERY NIGHT OUR BODY NEED TO SHUT DOW AND GET SOME SLEEP. I CALL THIS "SL" 

I STARTED WAFO WASL ON JUNE 12 2006. IT IS SIMPLE. IT WORKS FOR ME. MY BLOOD PRESSURE WAS AS HIGH AS 204/105.  NOW BP IS UNDER CONTROL WITH A COUPLE LITTLE PILLS.. MY WEIGHT WAS AS HIGH AS 254., NOW THE WEIGHT IS BETWEEN 145 AND 150. I HAVE NOT MISSED A DAY OF WALKING BRISKLY AND AVERAGE 8743 STEPS PER DAY SINCE JUNE 12, 2006. I HAVE NOT BEEN SICK SINCE JUNE 12, 2006.

I SAID TO ME-" IF I KEEP DRINKING AND EATING LIKE I AM RIGHT NOW, WHERE WILL I BE IN FIVE YEARS? " I WILL BE DEAD.

NOTICE

I WAS TALKING TO ME.

ME ANSWERED ME.

YOU CAN'T DO EVERYTHING

BUT YOU CAN DO SOMETHING!

WHAT CAN I DO?

WELL I CAN WALK!

I WILL WALK

THAT WAS 104 POUNDS AGO. 

THAT WAS 39,904,493 STEPS AGO

NOW THIS IS REALLY SOMETHING

SINCE JUNE 12, 2006 

NOT BEEN SICK -NOT MISS A DAY OF WALKING

- AVERAGING 7949 STEPS A DAY

DRINK LOTS OF WATER

EAT FRUIT VEGGIES AND NUTS EVERY DAY

WALK BRISKLY EVERY DAY

SLEEP AT LEAST SIX HOURS.EVERY DAY

I CALL IT -WAFO WASL - WATER FOOD WALK SLEEP

 Recently a famous speaker said, “always be dissatisfied”. I disagree. All of us were born dissatisfied – scared and dumb. Somewhere between getting born and now, most of us changed our minds or it got changed for us. Staying unhappy and dissatisfied does not lead to being happy and healthy. Abe Lincoln said we must make up our mind to be happy. That is a fundamental.

 Fundamentals do not come naturally, they are taught.  The alphabet, arithmetic- chemistry- languages –COMMON SENSE - and even Happy Healthy Living.

I enjoy basketball and Michael Jordan is one of my favorites. He said “The day you get away from doing the fundamentals, the bottom falls out”.  That is when you get dissatisfied. We do not need to stay dissatisfied.

 

Our body needs only two fuels to survive – water and food. Those two are Fundamentals. I call them WAFO.

 Now if you get away from the fundamentals, your bottom may fall out, you might get to be a humongous blob, or worse. YOU WILL DIE IF COVID-19 GETS YOU.

Our body must perform just two functions – motion and sleep. There are so many choices to get in motion. Golf, dancing, tennis, hiking. The list goes on forever. I chose to walk every day.

Every day our SMARTPHONE loses its OOMPH and must be recharged.  Same thing, our body needs to shut down and get sleep. The Health gurus recommend 6 to eight hours of sleep a day.

I call these two functions WASL.

WAFO WASL is my passion.

It is the fundamental requirement for a Happy Healthy Life. I WALK- read-research-write- blog -speak – and live the WAFO WASL .

Today we are at war with COVID-19.

 There is cleaner water, and food today Education is getting out there. We are making progress, But still there is a very long way to go.  Sickness, illness, and chronic disease is slowly but surely being replaced by happy healthy living.

COVID -19 HAS ATTACKED OUR WORLD

It is the most deadly enemy in my lifetime  and I am 88 years old.

.I believe we can and will win then fight. 

Dissatisfied people do not solve the problems.

 HAPHPY HEALTHY SMART  PEOPLE DO

 Here are Five fundamental words that get us FROM BEHIND THE CURVE AND ON THE ROAD TO VICTORY. 

SAY THEM OUT LOUD

l  do what WHAT SMART PEOPLE SAY AND DO 

I BETTER DO IT NOW

DO IT

BUMPY ROAD AHEAD

From the time I was in the eighth grade I was on some sort of diet. After college it was a game every new year to make a resolution that this was going to be the year to get lean, trim and healthy. I have tried most every diet to hit the market

. In 1977 I wrote a diet book titled “Give up the fat-The diet fat to fit kit.” For about six months I travelled around the country giving talks, appearing on TV and giving interviews to reporters. It was my 15 minutes of fame.

Then I hit a bump in the road. One customer said loudly and often that she read the book three times and gained weight. My logic had been so brilliant. If you eat less calories than your body burns you will lose weight. It never crossed my mind that if you kept this up for an extended amount of time you would starve to death.

Some of last year diets reappear, and new fantabulous ones hit the market every New year. Old actors,“has been football players” ,and talk show folks are new fish in the diet market waters. It is the economy big push to get the after Christmas market a boost. The bump in the road hits right about now. Getting seven meals a day in the US mail to lose hundreds of pounds and look like a…. well you know the drill. The odds for success are about the same as winning the lottery. Got your ticket? The drawing is big this week.

On June 12, 2016 I started walking every day. Then the routine of eating seven or more fresh and fresh frozen fruits and veggies and nut was becoming a habit. Drinking more water and less sugar drinks ended up with lots of water and no sugar drinks. I began watching what was good stuff to eat and what was not so good. There were less bumps in the road. Some weeks I lost a couple pounds, sometimes lost none, and even some weeks gained a pound. I felt better, my blood pressure was getting under control.

 When there is a bump in the road, I get directions from those who have been there. My top Doctor of 25 years runs two miles in the morning and evening on the treadmill. My sports Doctor has run seventeen Boston Marathons. I have had the opportunity to travel to eight Iron man and women events in the US, observe them and ask their advice.bob

Long ago I stopped asking advice from diet sellers and get my answers from those who walk their talk. Great athletes are consistent. They teach that is OK to fail but not OK to quit. They work at what they do, then do it better. 

When there is a bump in the road, Drink lots of water, eat good food, walk briskly, and get a good night’s sleep.
