A LITTLE DIP IN THE ROLLER COASTER

Last week I had a big fall while walking briskly.  I have no idea how I got up, took  this selfie, and drove home. I do remember Ann on the phone with the 911 operator as the firemen came in the back door. That is the start of three days of miracles, answered prayers, and fantastic care in the hands of the Number One Trauma Unit in Texas.

I was in  La La Land from the time the firemen put me in the hands of the EMT, arriving in the emergency room, and then to the care of the TEXAS NO. ONE  Trauma Intensive Care unit.. I do remember telling the emergency room doctor that I felt okay and I was training to defend my title as winner of my division in the Brookshire Fresh 5, so check me out so I can go home.

I got the first jolt from the fantastic trauma doctor. “No, no, no, no to training for a five K. You got busted ribs and a punctured lung. I don’t want to put in a tube, and maybe it will fill up on its own. Breath into this thing as often as you can.” I like docs who put things in words an athlete understands. The medical language is scary. Closed fracture of Multiple Ribs of Left Side. Pneumothorax on Left.

Somewhere in my ICU time things changed. The fantastic staff took walks with me.  We talked about how I have been doing deep breathing exercises for four years. I was treated like an injured athlete who wanted to get back in shape. Before being released they all cautioned to limit my brisk walking to a quarter mile and have somebody with me.

Five days later I went for my final check up. The nurse checked my vitals, and said the lung was at 100%. Another of the fantabulous Trauma DOCS gave me the green light to get back on my routine.

If you do what I do, you will improve your blood pressure, lower chances of dementia, Alzheimer’s, some types of cancer, many chronic diseases, heart and stoke problems, obesity, and stop getting old before you time. The doc also said that the chances of surviving trauma would really improve.

Ready?  This is what I do every day.

 

Drink lots of water and quit sugar drinks. Took about 18 months to go cold turkey on sugar drinks.

Eat at least seven fresh or fast frozen fruits and veggies and nuts every day.

Walk Briskly, starting out for five minutes and kick it up. I do 20 to 48 minutes every day. Took at least a year to get there.

Get seven or more hours of deep sleep.  Make it an appointment to keep every day.

Now here is the kicker.  Blow out all the air all the way to the bottom of your belly. Bring in all the air it takes to fill your lungs. Now blow the air out. Start doing this four or more times every day. It took over a year to breath this way almost all the time.

I am at 100%. Thanks to all my great care givers, and thank you for the prayers.

IT IS NO SECRET.   I WEAR RUNNING SHOES ALL THE TIME. NO EXCEPTION.

 SOME OF THE DUMBEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WEAR BLACK SUITS, BLACK TIES, AND BLACK SHOES AND WALK AROUND THE CAPITAL IN AUSTIN ACTING "OFFICIAL"  AND THEY ATTRACT TO ME LIKE FLIES.

I WAS WEARING MY WAFO WASL HAT AND BRIGHT ORANGE SHIRT CARRYING MY WALKING STICK, WEARING A NEWER PAIR. OF RUNNING SHOES AS ANY 35 YEAR OLD FOR THE 50TH TIME WOUULD DO,

 

THIS  YOYO CAME UP TO ME , GOT IN MY ELDERLY FACE, POINTED TO MY  RUNNING SHOES SHOES  AND SAID "SIR".

I USED MY 85 YEAR OLD QUIVERING VOICE AND SAID.  "MY DOCTOR SAYS I MUST WEAR  THESE. "

THE OFFICIAL IN BLACK SAID "I AM SO SORRY".

I SAID LOUD AND CLEAR IN MY 35 YEAR OLD SPEAKING VOICE.

'YES YOU REALLY ARE SORRY."

 


MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

Image result for clipart man in mirrorThis is the time I ask the man in the mirror the big question. If I drink and eat this year like I did last year where will I be? We both smiled as I fired back the answer.

I will be 35 for the 51st time. The blood pressure when resting will be 90 something over 50 something. If I am really working out hard the blood pressure might jump to 130 something over 60 something.

My weight will move between 143 and 145. Do you remember when it had been as high as 254 and up and down like a yoyo? Did you forget that the blood pressure was as high as 204/105?

This New Year will be Healthy and Happy, just like last year. The mirror smiled, and I did too.

Being healthy is not a Sprint. It is a Marathon. Warning. Here come the “hurry up and fail, instant gratification folks with the miracle stuff to make us lose weight and look new and fantabulous. The Diet industry makes the move at the beginning of the New Year. I have been there, done that many times in the last 85 years. Being on a diet is not sustainable for the long pull.

 

WAFO . Our bodies must have only two fuels, water and food. We all add other things every day and get that stuff into the gut.  I took the flue shot again this year and am not overjoyed with the results. Almost every day I enjoy a couple dark chocolate kisses.  I don’t count calories. Most every day I have a “Sweet Treat”. But every day I drink about 70 ounces of water “WA” and eat “FO”  7 or more fresh and fresh frozen fruits and veggies and nuts.  That is a consistent part of my life since June 12, 2006. I do not drink Soda Pop PERIOD.

WASL. Our bodies perform two vital functions, or we are dead as a door nail.

  1. WA          I walk. We must have motion. There are too many choices for me, so I walk briskly every day. Most days I walk briskly for 40 to 48 minutes. At my age anything under a 20-minute mile is brisk. This has been a consistent part of my life since June 12, 2006. I have averaged almost 9000 steps a day. My goal this year is to do 10,000 steps a day and to speed up the pace a bit.
  2.   SL     SLEEP       That is sleep. The body is like a smart phone. It loses its “OMPH”. Sleep gives us a recharge. Top Docs say we need 8 hours of sleep. I am working on it.

If I can do it, you can too. Diets are not sustainable for the long pull. My advice is WAFO WASL. Save you money and have a Healthy Happy new year.

 

 


SAY HI TO THE CRYSTAL COWPILE

In the 1980s I had a monthly newsletter with about 100 subscribers around the country. The goal was to get folks to stop taking experts so seriously. I remember some of my "stuff."

If banks are so poor , how come they keep building new branch offices.

Gold was selling for about $ 600 an ounce. I predicted  that gold would go to $800 , then again it may go to $400.

I informed my readers that I was an expert weather predictor and was never wrong.  I gave them a sample of my prediction.

"There is a 50% chance it will rain today. Tomorrow there is a 50% chance it won't rain. I am never wrong."

What scares the badingle out of me is there were and still are people who believe every dumb thing that  EXPERTS say.. X is an unknown and a SPIRIT is a drip under pressure.

35 IS THE NEW 86

 

I had my 35th  birthday again this month and it will be the 51st time.. In order for me to stay 35 years old every year, I must pay attention to to only two fuels to feed this machine called  MY BODY.  Two two fuels - lets call WAFO ( WATER AND FOOD)

Water: Get addicted to water instead of sugar drinks. drink a bunch of water

Food:  WAFO

EaT 6 or more fresh or frozen fruits, veggies and nuts every day. It is a DOUBLE DEAL2014-04-04 12.11.12-1

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The place where we have our Noggin-Gut and all the parts on the outside that jiggle is called BODY. That is where we live.

This body we live in must do just two things to say alive.

WALK and SLEEP.  Let's call that WASL

  • it must move- get in motion. TOO MANY CHOICES   so walk -WALK EVERY DAY _ SHOOT FOR 10,000 STEPS EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

Walk: WA

Walk briskly for a minimum of of five minutes but get up to 20 to 45 minutes every day for the rest of your life.
