FALL WITH BOB

Failure to warm up proves costly.

I rolled into Cherry Creek at 8:AM on a cold Friday morning. I had five layers of coats, my toboggan, facemask and two hoods. I know how to handle cold weather Got out of the truck, set the Run Program on my Smart Phone, and took off on my morning two-mile brisk walk.

All professional runners and walkers see the first major mistake of the day. I did not warm up.  Everything is going on schedule. On the last 200 feet I am a few seconds slow. At the right angle turn I cut across the grass. My big body went sailing like a flying walrus, hit the concrete, bounced, and lay there spread eagle with the breath knocked out. I heard a runner say “You all right?” I will never know how she got me up, how I took the selfie, or drove home. God works in mysterious ways.

The rest of Friday was a blur.  Ann got the five lays off of me, called 911. She kept me from passing out while staying on her smartphone with the 911 operator. The firemen arrived and were attending to me and my vitals and Ann was still on the phone telling the operator they had arrived. The medics arrived, loaded me in the ambulance, and off to Momma Frances in Tyler. I informed them I felt better and was training for the Fresh 5K in Early March.

We arrived and I was with the emergency room doctor. The great staff were moving me from one cart to another, prodding and poking Somewhere in this great reception I got the gown that covers nothing, but still had my pants and red running shoes. I told everyone who was there I felt better and was sure I’d be home tonight, a little sore, but home.

My trauma doctor arrived. First item on the agenda was the Fresh 5. No.No.No. .  He would see me later after my body fed his team more data. Brain scans. chests scans, etc. I am in the top Trauma unit in Texas, and one of the top 10 in the USA. This intensive care staff is the best of the best. My Doc came into the room. He had been in surgery for seven hours. He laid it out. Busted ribs, the left lung had been punctured, but had a chance to fill back up without surgery. He was watching the latest feed from my body thru the computers.  It will take six to twelve weeks or more to get back to where I was at 8 a.m. this morning.

99% of me being smart is knowing what I am dumb at. My responsibility is to take advice from those that are smarter than me.

These three days with my trauma team were a bit painful but a great positive experience. I would not have made it without Murphy. Ann I love you. I am better today than Yesterday. That is progress.

TRANSPORTATION OF THE FUTURE IN VAN ZANDT COUNTY

I had the honor to represent Van Zandt County at the 11th Annual Transportation Forum in Austin. We can be proud of the Texas Department of Transportation folks in this county. I 20 and the State roads 110, 19, 17, 64, , and more are getting better. Our TxDot and their contractors have done a fantastic job on tight budgets and horrible weather, tornados, and floods. I heard this from officials from different regions of the state. Next time you slow down or stop because they are fixing something, be sure to give a “thumbs up” to the Best of the Best.

Propositions 1 and 7, and House Bill 20 will now put dollars directly into Texas roads.  The voters made it clear that Sales Tax Gasoline tax is to stay in road work and not a political grab bag.  The federal government got the same message loud and clear. Both parties quickly passed the bill and the President signed it. $105 Billion Dollars is to come to the states for fixing up the Interstate roads, but they do not get the money unless the project is “SHOVEL READY”.

The Councils of Government,Metropolition Planning Organizations,Regional Mobilitiy Authorities , Ecomomic Develoment Officials, Construction Contractors, Rail Experts, and Engineering Firms have been burning the midnight oil to be ready for 2016.

Here are just a few projects ready to roll. I- 69 is starting construction from Houston to the North East Corner of Texas. This will give a boost to chemical and other Gulf Coast industry, relieve congestion and increase employment opportunities in East Texas

A 400 foot plus high bridge over the Port of Corpus Christi is a go. This will allow for the BIG BOATS when the Panama Canal get dredged deeper. The big boats will a give tremendous boost to the economy. We have 11 deep water ports in Texas. An ocean going tanker came out of Aransas Pass this month with Texas oil heading overseas. Congress cleared the way this year for the US to export oil for the first time since the 1970s.

Texas Department of Transportation is studied by Other States and Nations. They were there taking notes. TxDot allocates the dollars smartly. They plan what goes where and when. TxDot has three bosses, the customer (that’s us), the tax payer, and the legislators. They serve us all well.

We have the best and brightest minds planning ahead. Rail will double by 2040. We have 195,000 miles of state maintained roads. That amounts to over two trillion dollars of assets. There are 53,000 bridges, 10,000 miles of rail, and the largest air transportation in the US with DFW and Bush as the anchors.

If Texas were a country, it would be the 14th largest economy in the world.

The next five years are a game changer. Cars will be safer. There will be driverless cars on the road this year. We will drive less and rideshare more, work remotely more. The Millennials will outnumber all people over thirty-five. There will be more walking and riding bicycles to work in the large cities. Oh yes. We will figure out how to fix our county roads.

It is a great time to live in North East Texas.

PROTEIN TO GET THE DAY GOING GOOD

Plenty of lean protein gets the day started with a "zipadeedoda".

Get out of the sack, do your bathroom business, make a power shake with a dab of  protein.  I use a protein powder, water, frozen pineapple and blueberries, a bit of banana, and ice cubes in the blender.

My Smart Phone loses its oomph and needs to recharge. Our body loses its oomph so we need to recharge it first thing every morning. Don't get "
nerdy". just do it. No big deal.
