Steve Jobs in his famous Stanford University speech said “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And like any great relationship, it just gets better as the years roll on. So, keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

 

I started look at age 22. Fifty-two years and over 16 businesses later I had not found my passion until that day. Steve Jobs and Oprah said. “You will know when you find your Passion.”  I was standing in the Gulf of Mexico and talking to myself. “Do something you can do. “I could Walk. I WILL WALK”. Since June 12, 2006 I have never missed a day of walking Briskly. Steve Jobs put it this way. “Like any great relationship, it gets better and better as the years roll on.” He also said this in his speech and I say it right now to you. “Keep looking for your passion until you find it. Don’t settle.”

 

 

Walking every day has made me younger and healthier, and I feel better than I was at age 35.

The North-East Texas Health department had me on their billboards as their poster boy. I write about walking, blog about walking, and talk about walking.

 

If I can transform from a dying old man to a healthy happy, passionate “35-year-old” then you can to.

“How can I do that?” you ask.

You will need only two easy to get, simple to use fuels, WATER and FOOD every day.

Your body has only two tasks to do.

Get in motion, so WALK every day.

SLEEP for seven or more hours every night.

WAFOWASL 

That is it. WATER, FOOD, WALK,SLEEP

This becomes a HABIT. More water, less sugar drinks and eventually no sugar drinks.  Fresh and fresh frozen fruits and veggies and nuts. You get better and better habits and have only whole grains, desert once a week, smaller helpings, less modified stuff, and make more good decisions.

Walking every day and sleeping every night become more of a daily ROUTINE.

Now the way you eat and move is a DISCIPLINE and other people start to see you as a leader they want to follow.

You are CONSISTENT. You Are HEALTHY AND HAPPY.  

Four simple steps that turn into a habit then a, routine then a discipline, done consistently.

Juicing good fruit grinds up the “roughage”  or  fiber.

 Fiber is sortof like sandpaper. It cleans out your entrails.  It cleans out the plumbing in your gut.

Keeps you from getting stopped up.

Fruit take longer to eat , is better for you, and is healthy.

POPPING POPCORN

Popcorn can be a healthy snack, but you need to mind the added ingredients.

MY  RESEARCH TEAM IS NOW GIVING TMI

 A single cup of air-popped corn has only 30 calories. A one ounce serving – 3 full cups – is still less than 100 calories. And, it has 3 grams of fiber to boot.

Most people, however, do not eat their popcorn this way. In fact, the most common format is movie-theater popcorn. Beyond the gigantic portion size, the popcorn is soaked in unhealthy fats and sodium. A large tub can easily reach 1000 calories, with over 50 grams of saturated fats – 250 percent of the daily recommended maximum! If you do purchase popcorn at the movie theater, opt for the smallest size possible.

 

Shoot for popcorn with less than 100 mg of sodium per serving and less than 10 grams of sugars per serving.

When it comes to pop-at-home popcorn:

  • avoid preservatives such as TBHQ (may cause nausea, delirium, and ringing of the ears)
  • in microwavable popcorn, a common ingredient used to create a buttery flavor is diacetyl. Avoid it, as it may lead to respiratory illnesses.
  • avoid artificial sweeteners, which are sometimes used instead of sugar.

Note: If you have children under the age of 4, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends NOT serving them popcorn due to the risk of choking.

It’s easy to make your own air-popped corn. You can buy popcorn kernels for a pittance at any supermarket.

IT WAS BAD- REALLY BAD

Saturday afternoon of First Monday Weekend, the weather folks had predicted big thunderstorms.  That is not good news. We expected a crowd of about 150,000 in our town of less than 5000. About noon, it looked like the real McCoy and the crowd started to head home as it was looking scary in the southern part of the county. Some vendors started packing and heading out, but there were about 4000 vendors and 20,000 shoppers still here and RV parks were full.

Our police, fire and first responders are of the best in the country. At 4:45 PM they hit the sirens and went into full alert. The grounds got flooded with the downpour. There was nothing for the folks to do but get wet, pray and brace for the rain.

Between 4:15PM and 7:30 PM Saturday April 30,2017 there were at least five tornados and they hit one after another. About 1500 homes were affected with winds up to 140 mph. There we 52,000 without power. There were four killed: dozens hurt, livestock lost, trees and buildings leveled. Governor Abbot declared it a disaster.

Just before 5 PM Ann and I hunkered down in the hall with water, power bars, flashlight, and two fully charged smartphone, blankets and rain gear. No train came at us, just lots of rain.  Smartphones do save lives. Mark  the weatherman  was live on our phone and so was the radar and the warnings from our first responders. There was no power. When we “unhunkered” about 6:15PM. It was black dark for the next 12 hours.

The smartphones were our eyes and ears until daylight and still is our main way of communicating in the county.

When it looked like there was to be a tornado hit the ground in the county below us, some highly trained first responders headed to the Canton High School to set up the triage. Within minutes the disaster teams from the power companies were getting the equipment ready at different locations to get here by daylight. It was worse than predicted so the crews that replace the big lines and transformers were already loading big trucks with big stuff to get here at dawn. My County Commission had reported that those big poles looked like spaghetti. That work order made sense to them and here they come.

Dogs cattle and exotic animals we injured, shook up and lost. Here comes the AGGIE Vet Disaster Team. They were busy in the county where there was a lot of damage and injury. Yep, smartphones and great first responders save lives.

Everybody needs water and food. About 3AM at Brookshire there was a crew unloading big 18 wheelers with ice and water and trucks getting it to all parts of the county. Walmart and Brookshire’s were getting frozen foods to where it need to go to “feed the multitude”.  Red Cross, salvation Army and disaster teams from everywhere were here doing the great work they do.
