CROSS COUNTRY is BRISK WALKING

2013-03-05-16-35-35

It is Fall and that means football. Bands practicing, mum buying, homecoming parades, and Friday night is East Texas.

Let’s talk about the Saturday morning after. I mean getting up about four AM. Then on a school bus full of kids in running suits, getting off in a field where there are rolling hills, grass, dew and country smells. There are over seven hundred half-awake junior and senior high kids putting up tents, decorated with their school colors and sports hoopla. There are a bunch of parents and relatives also here looking for a cup of coffee to go with their morning burger doodle breakfast on a bun. This is an East Texas Cross Country Meet.

A typical course is between two and seven miles long on farm land and sometimes on roads. Canton is the Walking Capital of Texas and this course is fantabulous. The boys distance is a bit longer than the girls, and the junior high setup is a bit shorter than the senior high. There are medals for the fastest runners in each group and there are trophies for the top teams.

I have watched the Canton bunch of seniors since they stared back in junior high. I was there to watch this great crew grow up. Four or five of the girls were up for homecoming queen. When they were in junior high they believed they were better than the seniors. This present junior high bunch now believes they are better. All the coaches and the volunteers who dedicate their time and unbelievable talent to working yearlong with those seven hundred student athletes deserve our thanks

I write about health and wellness. Here is what I saw on that Saturday morning. Before each group started they all went out about twenty feet from the start and heard the rules, stepped back, a horn blew and the races begin. They are led by a four-wheeler. At major turns, volunteers and markers made the course ahead clear. A large crowd cheered as the runners cross the finish line, using their last batch of energy.

What happened next caught my attention. Every one of those runners started drinking a bottle of water. Water was being passed out by teammates, competitors, coaches, parents and strangers.

None of those kids were obese nor medically obese.

The health industry says that 70% of our US population is overweight or obese and over 30% is medically obese.

The cross country teams drink lots of water, eat a bunch of food and some of it is fresh or fast frozen fruit and veggies, and nuts. These teenagers exercise a lot and are consistent and focused. They don’t sleep enough. Someday they will get more sleep.

These remarkable teenagers are an inspiration. Thank you, coaches and volunteers for all that you do.

RELAX AND SLEEP ARE  GOOD THINGS

Sleep helps repair the  body. Sleep makes your heart tick better, helps you remember things you have been forgetting, helps you in the battle to quit eating bad stuff, and stops you from being so grumpy.

Take a Power Nap during the day. Try it. It gives a fresh start, and gets rid of tension.

Here is another tip. It is weird, but it works. It is called Auto suggestion.

Try saying this outloud.

MY ENTIRE BODY IS IN A STATE OF PERFECT RELAXATION. I FEEL THE BLOOD RUSHING THROUGH EVERY VEIN , ARTERY AND CAPILLARY GIVING ME RENEWED ENERGY

One more idea before I get too relaxed

Breathing

Let all the air out of your lungs. Use your belly muscles to get it out. Push- get that old air out.Now fill those lungs up. Use the belly muscles to fill the lungs up. do this three or four times a day. Make it the start of a habit to do it all the time.

DATA DATA DATA

img_1357

Right out of college with majors in speech and economics I had 45 days to earn a bit of money before being drafted. I worked for a great company that put me in the industrial engineering department on the night shift in a weld shop counting welds made by welders. The company needed the data.

The soldier who kept data on draftees wrote in my folder that I WAS AN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER with four years of College and a diploma. For two years I was in the office of the Quarter Master General Far East located in Tokyo Japan. This is the bunch that gets food and supplies to Armed Forces when and where it must be, based on DATA.

The dictionary says DATA is the accumulation of facts and statistics for reference and analysis. In my case nobody ever checked the facts or analysis of me.

Since June 12,2006 I have walked over 28,000,000 steps and have recorded this daily data on a program called WALKERTRACKER. Today there are better ways to accumulate this data on HEALTH APP.

I use Google for research in this fast changing field of Health and Wellness.

Our bodies need two fuels, food and water. Our bodies must do two functions, walk and sleep.

WA FO WA SL is my health and wellness war cry. I want to dismantle the sickness, illness and chronic disease industry.

As we start the 21st century the data is coming faster and clearer every day. Let’s use it efficiently and effectively.

WATER (WA) drink a little more water and less sugar drinks every day until that day we stop drinking sugar drinks.

2014-04-04 12.11.12-1

FOOD (FO) eat at least 6 fresh or fresh frozen fruits and veggies and nuts every day.

img_1300

WALK (WA) walk briskly for twenty to 40 minutes every day.

SLEEP (SL) get at least 7 or more hours of sleep every day.

That is the starting point of a healthy lifestyle. As more data comes in, constantly tweak and improve and change your life style.

“99% OF BEING SMART IS KNOWING WHAT I AM DUMB AT” r e moore

Healthy Living is not a destination, but is a roller coaster up and down, sometimes bumpy journey.

It is never too late to start. I started “thinking about it” in the 1990s weighing 256 and blood pressure of 204/105. On June 12, 2006 at 75 years’ old I started using the best data available to test, use, tweak, adjust, and change my way of living. Today I am 100 pounds lighter and the blood pressure is OK.

Today I seek advice only from those who walk the walk and check the DATA source.

Based on the latest DATA here is a great way to start.

Stan Up -Run in place while wiggling and giggling for 30 seconds.

Blow out all the air from your lungs, pushing with your belly muscles. Take a deep breath, yawn, smile, and sit down.

The DATA says this is a great way to start a healthy Life Style.

BREAD IS GOOD

You can make bread at home . We Don’t. We buy Bread

Bread sellers add stuff to give it shelf life. If we eat more of that crap and don’t burn it out or flush it out, we give it too much “Belly Life. ” That causes people to call you “Fatty”. That is not good.

Get Whole Grain-(100% whole wheat).  Bread Sellers confuse us with labels.

Words like Enriched flour, Multi-grain, Organic, Unbleached / Bleached  are misused and tricky.

I use an app called FOODUCATE. Take a picture of the bar code and it rates it A B C or D and tells you why?
